W4FHU Radio Club Meetings
Greetings,
It has been an honor to serve as secretary for the club
for the last year. Last month’s meeting was cancelled due to raining
weather.
Joe Loucka(AG4QC) called the meeting to order in room
210 of the Gardner Center on the campus of Freed Hardeman University.
Those in attendance included Joe and Sue Loucka, Barry Smith, Joe
Newton, Thad Williams, Jimmy Helvering, John Adams, James and Renee
Webb, and Mike and Louise Burkhead.
First on the agenda was the election of the new
officers. Joe asked if anyone would retain current positions and Barry
Smith agreed to keep Tresurer for another year. Louise Burkhead
suggested that James Webb would make a great secretary and he agreed to
take the position. Joe Loucka asked Ron Means if he would consider
taking over Presidency and he graciously accepted. All the positions
were unanimously voted favorably by attending members.
There was a nomination by Ron Means for Dan Crump to be
Vice-President pending his acceptance due to his absence. John Adams
second the motion and the club members present voted unanimously in
favor of this. Ron will talk with Dan to see if he will accept this
position for the upcoming year.
Next on the agenda was the upcoming field day activities
on June 28, 2008. It was agreed to host this year’s event again at Gene
Record Park in Henderson off North Church Street. Everyone will meet at
Jack’s around 8 a.m. then head to the Park to begin setup. Ron Means
will bring the club bus and hang the banners. Mike Burkhead was
volunteered to bring a generator and he agreed to bring an HF radio and
power supply. Hopefully someone can scare “up” an antenna.
Since the last eating meeting was
cancelled it was agreed that there was plenty of food supplies already
purchased. If your are in the neighborhood stop on by and fellowship
with the crew.
Last on the agenda was a wrap-up of
the recent swapfest held June 7, 2008.
Ron recapped the email that he sent stating Cedar City Sales was
impressed and very thankful for the hospitality the club members shown
them in their return to our swapfest. He also commended the club members
for their loyal work in all aspects of the event (setup on Friday night,
testing, door monitors, sales of concessions, talk in and take down;
etc) On the downside he mentioned that the lapse of a year hurt our
turnout along with increase in gas prices and the last minute change
from Hamfest to swapfest. He suggested that if we have a meet next year
we might incorporate other events. These events will be discussed at
future club meetings and unveiled when finalized. Means of advertising
the event to obtain better results in turn out were also discussed.
On wrap up, Joe Loucka was
commended for the job he has done with the club over the last two
years. He opened and renewed an interest in the technical side of “home
brewing” building kits for radio receivers. It was agreed by all that
the highlights of his tenure were the structure of the meetings that
included “round table” participation by putting tables together instead
of classroom setting. This enabled all to see what was going on and
pass around examples of various projects. He received a round of
applause for his efforts. From soldering proper joints and connections,
building antennas, understanding gates and switches, taking a “bunch of
parts and a board” and making receivers that worked we covered a lot!
And now I pass “pen and paper” to the new secretary
James Webb to keep up with the new president, Ron Means, as he takes us
into the next year.
Louise Burkhead
